Problems with Paper Curl in a Printer or Copier?

If there are curl problems in a printer or copier, try the following suggestions:

  1. Try printing on the other side of the paper.  Paper has a "wire" side and a "felt" side when it is made and each side has different curl properties.

  2. Try a Xerox brand and/or other brands. Xerox brand papers are made to specification to minimize curl.  If all or most papers have excessive curl (either side printed), this may indicate the problem is machine related.

  3. If you have tech. rep. for the printer or copy machine, have them check if the settings of the machine are within specification.

  4. If a paper is called "copy paper", the manufacturer should be guaranteeing the performance of the paper, check with them.

  5. At a store with copy machines run some of your errant paper in their machines.  If curl is about the same as in your machine the curl problem most likely the paper.

  6. When all else fails, email me!  I can be reached at TechMan@PaperCurl.com.

  7. Those of you interested in more technical aspects of paper curl will be interested in the main site at www.PaperCurl.com.

  8. Recent innovations to the paper making machine (e.g. metering size press) may be altering the curl properties of paper when subjected to laser printer fusers, especially if the paper is not manufactured at a low enough moisture content (e.g. 4% or less) to prevent away-from-print curl. Even when the paper has the correct moisture, it can easily pick up moisture when exposed to relative humidities normally encountered and could curl when printed. One suggestion for (temporary) help would be to store paper in plastic wrap when not in use. Finding a paper that is manufactured which addresses the effects of the metering size press coating application shortcomings is a longer term solution. Paper manufacturers are welcome to contact me at TechMan@PaperCurl.com.
